reported, \u201cA group of seventeen Latvians and Lithuanians claiming to be \u2018refugees from the Russians,\u2019 landed in Northumberland last night. According to one account, the fishing boat arrived in the Danish port of Hirtshals in June 1946, with eight men, four women, and a 15-month child on board. A few months later on October 5, the <em>Daily Mail<\/em> (republished in <em>V\u00e4lis-Eesti<\/em> on November 3), reported that after spending two months in Ireland due to weather conditions, the boat\u2019s captain, Verner V\u00e4li, and eight Estonian refugees left for Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic. Previously, V\u00e4li and 58 refugees escaped to Sweden from Hiiumaa in a smaller boat. &#8221;I never want to return to Estonia as long as it&#8217;s under Russian control,&#8221; he told the <em>Daily Mail<\/em>. Two years later, on October 10, 1948, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eesti Teataja<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reported the sad fate of \u201cour compatriot Tohver from Hiiumaa\u201d who had arrived on the <\/span><b><i>Kalev<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He died in a \u201cmadhouse\u201d in Berrechid, Morocco, and was buried in an unmarked grave (see article). It is not known if the Kalev reached America, but V\u00e4li died Jan. 6, 1949, in a subway accident in New York City.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8211;Voldemar Kures, an Estonian journalist who wrote under the pseudonym \u201cFakt,\u201d published an article in <em>Stockholms-Tidningen Eestlastele<\/em> on Jun 8, 1947, about an interview with Toivo Sillaots, secretary of the Estonian Seamen\u2019s Welfare bureau. Sillaots told him that a seaman named Karl Tammer, a mechanic on the Swedish freighter <em>Fylgia<\/em> (not a Viking ship), had sent him a letter about visiting Liverpool the previous summer where he had met an Estonian and a Czech who planned to sail from Sweden to Brazil but only made it as far as England, where they sold their yacht and \u201clived a beautiful, fun life\u201d in Liverpool. Tammer also wrote that in November 1946, he met two Estonians in Casablanca, and in March 1947 met two more in Las Palmas who may have come from the <em>Kalev<\/em> and <em>Elvi<\/em>. reported on August 1, 1948, that the <strong><em>Volo<\/em><\/strong>, a Latvian trawler with 37 refugees on board, left G\u00f6teborg, Sweden, on July 24, and docked in Cobh, Ireland, enroute to Montreal. However, it is not known if the <em>Volo<\/em> arrived in Canada or anywhere else.&#8211;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1948, Estonian newspapers in Sweden reported that the <\/span><b><i>Ly-Bohn<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> almost sank before it reached Falmouth, England, on November 10, 1948. The schooner had six men and six women on board who had \u201cescaped from their homeland to get away from the Russian terrorist.\u201d Following repairs, the boat planned to continue to Las Palmas. It is not known where the <\/span><b><i>Ly-Bohn<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ended its journey or what happened to its passengers (see article).<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211;Nearly all of the boats left from Sweden but in 1949, Volker Harpe, 20, and Helmuth Russow, 38, escaped from the Russian Zone in Germany on the <\/span><b><i>Felicitas<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Filicius<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), a homemade 33-foot-long (10.07 meter) yacht. The men, who referred to themselves as Estonians in the U.S. press (they were of Baltic German heritage), planned to sail to Canada. After five weeks at sea, however, the mast of their yacht broke in a storm and the outboard motor died. The men drifted helplessly in the Atlantic until July 4, 1949, when the captain of the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Britannic<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a British steamship, rescued them 750 nautical miles west of Ireland. The men landed in New York on July 9 and were detained on Ellis Island for six months before being paroled. In 1951, they were granted permission to remain in the United States and lived there for the rest of their lives. <\/span><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1d6c393 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"1d6c393\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7428d926 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7428d926\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211;Other reports of Viking boats offer even fewer details. The book <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eestlased Kanadas<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> mentions that nine men from an unnamed Viking boat drowned in the Bay of Biscay. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stockholms-Tidningen Eestlastele<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reported on January 9, 1949, that two refugee boats in the Bay of Biscay sank during storms, with no survivors. And on March 3, 1950, the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Baltimore Sun<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> published a long article about the Baltic refugees who had arrived in the United States since 1945. In addition to the known refugee ships, the article reported that eight people in a boat had landed in Miami in June 1949, but provided no further information. It also noted that three people had reached San Juan, Puerto Rico, on November 1, 1947. One drowned while landing, and the other two left the area.
